Spring Brook watershed restoration in Wheaton, IL
Spring Brook #1 in DuPage County, Illinois, flows southwest from the center of Wheaton to the West Branch of the DuPage River in Warrenville. Like scores of other waterways across northeastern Illinois, this stream has been straightened and channelized over the past century, first by farmers and later by suburban developers, eventually eliminating biodiversity and reducing the stream’s scenic value. Today, as urban/suburban runoff continues to degrade water quality, Spring Brook provides limited environmental benefits to either people or wildlife.
A new project aims to reverse all these facts and demonstrate how the many similar streams in Chicago’s suburban region can become healthy waterways again. The Wetlands Initiative and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County are partnering to restore a healthy two-mile corridor of this degraded stream within the popular St. James Farm and Blackwell forest preserves in Warrenville. Meanwhile, they are working with The Conservation Foundation and other partners to engage the entire upstream community in stewardship actions to help rehabilitate Spring Brook. Trees Forever involves people in hands-on conservation projects. They help communities with local tree-planting projects by providing technical, planning and financial assistance; and they help local committees engage others in the projects they work on. If trees and other native plants are going to survive and thrive, it’s important that the neighborhood and greater community are encouraged to get involved.
